DEAF KIDS CODE

Only 20% of Deaf adults are employed in the United States. We believe that the future lies within STEM fields, and we aim to give Deaf students the opportunity to further their education in computer science. The problem with most 'learn to code' websites already available is that most Deaf adults read English at a 5th grade level. Children read English at an even lower level. It is more difficult for them to teach themselves coding with traditional self-teaching tools. With our video translations of Khan Academy's coding lessons, we hope we can give these children interested in coding a medium to teach themselves coding, and give them access to more opportunities in the future.

OUR GOALS

We are a Purdue EPICS Team looking to provide products and services for the Deaf community
We aim to make programming and software more readily available to the Deaf community
We look to provide opportunities to Deaf students to enrich their growth in STEM fields
We work with the non-profit organization Deaf Kids Code to assess their needs

OUR TEAM

Our team consists of a dedicated group of Purdue students who actively explore ways to improve and give back to their community. Working with advisors and teaching assistants, our goal is to create innovative solutions to unique problems that the Deaf community faces. We aim to serve a purpose and use our skills as engineers, problem-solvers, and university students to fill a need.  We come from many disciplines, but we all have a passion for what we do and are driven to provide these services.

Our team also aims to work closely with our project partners, Shireen Hafeez, founder of Deaf Kids Code, and Blake Widmer to ensure that we are meeting the needs of the Deaf community and to see how our projects are serving a purpose and making a difference.
